Collision Repair Replacement Parts Guide

One of the most important decisions during a collision repair is determining what replacement parts will be used on your vehicle.

Many vehicle owners are surprised to learn that not all replacement parts are the same. Understanding the differences can help you make informed decisions about the quality, fit, and long-term performance of your repair.

OEM Parts (Original Equipment Manufacturer)

OEM parts are replacement body, mechanical, or electrical components that are manufactured by:

  • The original vehicle manufacturer, or
  • A supplier that manufactures the part to the vehicle manufacturer's specifications for use as a genuine OEM replacement.

OEM parts are designed to match the original equipment installed on your vehicle when it was built.

Many vehicle owners choose OEM parts because they are engineered to provide the same fit, function, and performance as the original components.

Potential benefits of OEM parts include:

  • Designed to manufacturer specifications
  • Consistent fit and finish
  • Compatibility with vehicle safety and driver-assistance systems
  • Helps maintain the vehicle as closely as possible to its original design

Aftermarket Parts

Aftermarket parts are replacement parts manufactured by companies other than the original vehicle manufacturer.

These parts are produced by independent manufacturers and are available from many different suppliers.

Aftermarket parts may:

  • Cost less than OEM parts
  • Be manufactured using different tooling or production methods
  • Vary in fit, finish, and material quality depending on the manufacturer

Some aftermarket parts perform well, while others may require additional adjustments during installation. Quality can vary between manufacturers, making it important to understand exactly what parts are being used in your repair.

Salvage (LKQ) Parts

Salvage parts, often referred to as LKQ (Like Kind and Quality) parts, are used components removed from previously owned vehicles.

These parts typically come from vehicles that have been declared total losses, dismantled, or otherwise removed from service.

Because salvage parts are previously used, they may:

  • Have prior wear and tear
  • Require cleaning or reconditioning
  • Contain cosmetic imperfections
  • Have an unknown history of previous damage or repairs

Many salvage parts can be an appropriate repair option, depending on the part, its condition, and the repair being performed.

Remanufactured Parts

Remanufactured parts begin as previously used components that have been rebuilt or restored to meet specified performance standards.

The remanufacturing process may include:

  • Disassembly
  • Inspection
  • Cleaning
  • Replacement of worn or damaged internal components
  • Reassembly and testing

Common remanufactured parts include:

  • Engines
  • Transmissions
  • Alternators
  • Starters
  • Steering racks
  • Brake calipers

Remanufactured parts differ from salvage parts because they have undergone a rebuilding process before being returned to service.

Questions to Ask Before Your Vehicle Is Repaired

Before authorizing repairs, consider asking:

  • What type of replacement parts will be used?
  • Are the parts OEM, aftermarket, salvage (LKQ), or remanufactured?
  • Why was each type of part selected?
  • Are OEM parts available for my vehicle?
  • Does my insurance policy address the use of replacement parts?
  • Will the replacement parts affect any manufacturer warranty or certification requirements?

Understanding your repair plan helps ensure there are no surprises and allows you to make informed decisions about your vehicle.
